Becky Jones, a native of Atlanta, learned to dance at an early age back in the time when dancers were accompanied by piano players and orchestras. The high school cheerleader and Homecoming Queen continued to love dance after she married.
When her children were small, she decided to teach dance in her home. The first year she had 20 students and the dance floor was just two pieces of plywood placed on the floor. The next year, when her attendance doubled to 40, she knew she needed to lease space and establish a dance studio.
Becky Jones School of Dance has been in the Concord Road/South Cobb Drive area of Smyrna for nearly 40 years. She has taught dance to three generations in some families.
Today the school averages about 250 students a year (some years have topped 400) and teaches all kinds of dancing. The school employs 10 teachers, each with their own specialties: Tap; Ballet - Pointe; Lyrical; Jazz; Hip-Hop; Break Dancing; Gymnastics; Pom Pom; Clogging; and Dance Character.
Dancers at the school participate in 2 major competitions a year. Winners will go on to compete nationally.
A highlight of Becky’s career was when she and two of her children went to the White House to perform with a group of dancers for the Carter administration.
Becky, who is now 71, keeps fit by keeping active. When she is not dancing, she is working out on the treadmill or participating in some activity with her family. Becky’s three grown children and some of her six grand-children reside in the Smyrna area.
