For more than 10 years, the Community Education Series at Emory-Adventist Hospital at Smyrna has provided the community with access to free medical expertise and lifestyle seminars, and deeply discounted health screenings. The calendar of events has become a highlight for area residents eager to see what’s in store each quarter.
Seminars are presented by a host of experts, including physicians, nurses, dietitians and counselors. Professionals from the community have also contributed including attorneys, self-defense experts, and Alzheimer’s counselors, to name a few.
With seminar topics ranging from the latest treatment for fibroids to protecting your assets, the reasons people attend are varied. Some have been diagnosed with a specific condition and want any information available. Others are simply passionate about health and enjoy expanding their knowledge. Many are attracted to the relevant topics not often presented in such a small (and free!) setting. The program also includes periodic screenings – such as those for cholesterol, prostate, bone density, and body mass index – offered free or at deeply discounted rates. Many visitors are grateful for the chance to receive these tests so easily.
While the program is no substitute for regular doctor visits, it does arm patients with information – and in some cases test results – to bring to appointments. For more information about the Community Education Series at EAH, or to view the current calendar, visit www.emoryadventist.org.
