It’s a big word, but if you ever have a TMJ disorder, you will never forget it!
The TMJ is a hinge joint found on both sides of the head just in front and near the bottom of the ear. It connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the temporal bone of the skull, hence the name temporomandibular joint. The joint is flexible so that the jaw can move up and down as well as side to side, which allows you to talk, chew, yawn, etc.
The joint is separated by a small disc composed of fibrocartilagenous tissue (similar to the firm, yet flexible cartilage of the ear). This articular disc is positioned between the two bones (mandible and temporal) that form the joint. Muscles help to hold the jaw joint pieces in place.
One of the most common disorders of the TMJ is when the disc slides out of its position between these two bones. Without that cushion, the pressure creates pain.
While injuries such as whiplash or a blow to the head can cause TMJ, it is often the unseen problem that results in TMJ. It could be rheumatoid arthritis, stress, or grinding of the teeth that cause TMJ disorder. Cold weather can make it ache even more.
People often complain of sinus problems or toothaches, when really they are experiencing TMJ disorder. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may have TMJ:
Pain or tenderness in the face area, or around the ear;
Inability to open your mouth wide;
Jaws that get stuck open or closed;
Clicking or popping when opening your mouth; and
Ddiscomfort while chewing.
A dentist, like Dr. Vivian Hudson, can help with TMJ. She would likely take a panoramic x-ray to determine the extent of the damage. Since stress and teeth grinding are often the problem, she would investigate that further. It could be that simply using a custom night-guard on your teeth while you sleep would solve your problem.
So if you are having a TMJ disorder, call Dr. Hudson or your dentist to determine the solution. TMJ can create severe pain which can be temporary or last for many years. Don’t wait. Call Dr. Hudson today for an appointment at 770-438-1520.
At Smyrna Smiles Dental Center...they’re a little different. Dr. Hudson personally sees each patient. While she keeps a pretty full schedule, she doesn’t over-do it, making appointments on top of appointments. As a patient, you will generally not have to wait for your appointment. Often you will arrive as another patient is leaving and the waiting room will be empty and quiet. She spends the time needed with each patient, but she schedules for it. Sure, she could make a lot more money by herding people through the doors, but that is just not Dr. Hudson. She likes to help people keep their teeth for as long as they live. And, she does create beautiful smiles. So whether you are experiencing discomfort, looking for a good dentist, or just want to improve your self-esteem by improving your smile, Dr. Hudson is the dentist to see. BTW, she takes most insurance. –Ginger Lewis, Publisher
